monthly media round-up: october

writing this one early this month.

the season turned chilly and i got into watching movies before bed again. i also got sick and had a few 2000's movies marathons.

TV Series

Love is Blind

2.5/5

efficient drama this season. i don't fully enjoy watching the episodes all the way through as it feels like watching emotional torture. but i'll admit something honest...i love watching reality show recaps on youtube. at the moment, i'm really into "psychology in seattle," made by dr. kirk honda. he comments on reality shows like love is blind and 90 day fiance. he has some interesting insights into these bizarre situations which inspires more compassion and curiosity for the people on these shows.

(another reality show recap youtube channel i follow is whitney port. former 'hills' cast member - she's pretty chill and comments on reality shows she was on along with her husband who is a former reality show producer. ok we're getting into deep dark secrets here)

Move

4/5

a docu-series about dancers/choreographers. each episode is so unique and immersive. a deep dive into passion. i especially loved the episode on ohad naharin. he said something that really touched me

you are more a body than a brain. i've been struggling with ptsd lately and have been feeling a deep disassociation between my body and my thoughts. this helped shift my perspective in de-centering myself around my thoughts.

Movies

this month has been all about 2000's nostalgia. i watched a few iconic anne hathaway movies. whoa, was it a walk down memory lane. some of these movies were better in my memory but they brought back a lot of nostalgia. especially the music. i love finding music from movies. this month has been great for that.

Fight Club

5/5

a local indie movie theater showed fight club at the beginning of the month, which kicked off the 2000's inspo. (ok fight club technically came out in 1999....close enough). this movie is iconic and i had absolutely no memory of what happened in it. a perfect time for a re-watch. wow i am so glad i watched this on the big screen. the visual details are such eye candy. i wish i could have paused at every scene just to inspect the background details and clothes. i was also blown away by the performances - each character is equally real as they are caricature. also where is my mind as the closer??! such a powerful movie that still holds up.
Pixies - Where is My Mind

The Princess Diaries

3.5/5

this movie is plain sweet and i loved seeing all the sf scenes. julie andrews plays royal so well. it doesn't drag too much and the music is so nostalgic. totally forgot how much i loved liz phair at that time.
Liz Phair - Why Can't I

(i also tried watching the princess diaries 2. could not finish)

The Devil Wears Prada

2/5

another iconic anne hathaway movie. this was good for a sick day but it drags a bit. also, hate to bring up the hills again but it feels like the entire storyline for that show was pulled from this movie, haha.

House Bunny

1.5/5

this movie drags a bit. i totally forgot that tyson ritter, the lead singer of the all-american rejects plays a love interest in the movie. for a few days i was minorly obsessed with the all american rejects again.
The All American Rejects - Swing Swing

13 Going on 30

3.5/5

jennifer garner's performance is so angelic, sweet, and funny in this. i was really endeared by her physical comedy and facial expressions. as a teenager i remember wishing so badly to be an adult. now that i'm over 30, i can say that getting older and being an adult really does feel so much better than my childhood and adolescence, haha.
