monthly media digest: august
Inspired by exponixio https://exponixio.bearblog.dev/monthly-wrap-up-media-diary-2-june-2023/
I want to start documenting the media I consume, because I consume a lot and often forget. I think this will be good record-keeping.
TV Series
How To With John Wilson 4/5 - Good content to fall asleep to (and I mean that in the best way). Meaty but not necessarily savory.
Claim to Fame 3/5 - The premise is silly but this show is all about strategy and doesn’t feel like watching emotional torture.
Movies
Barbie 4.5/5 - chef’s kiss. After watching Barbie I got really into watching Ryan Gosling movies.
Blue Valentine 4/5 - I watched this many years ago on a first date in high school. We went home in silence. Rewatching this as an adult all I can say is … pretty accurate.
La La Land 4/5 - I don’t even like musicals and I liked the music in this one. Emma Stone’s big eyes made me cry.
The Big Short 3/5 - I learned a lot about the housing bubble and subsequently fell into an anxiety spiral about money I don’t have.
Ya No Estoy Aquí 5/5 - This movie is gorgeous and subdued. Some of the imagery and emotions are really stuck with me. I feel like there’s a deep, stifled melancholy in me after watching this movie.
Books
Maybe You Should Talk to Someone - Lori Gottlieb - Omg. This book draws you in with the promise of spilling deep inner secrets of strangers as told by a therapist. Then it breaks your heart in two and assembles it back together, never quite the same as it was.
In the Dream House - Carmen Maria Machado -Interesting play on form. I relished each page. The author’s pen is readily sharp.
